Mindfulness

 Mindfulness is a skill that anyone can learn and utilize to their advantage. It is something to be cultivated and practiced and is especially useful in difficult and trying times. Mindfulness can benefit us in all areas of life. It is the act of being fully aware and present. Too often we find ourselves caught up in the future or the past without fully tending to our present experiences. When we allow ourselves to become carried away with our thoughts, worries, ruminations, or premonitions, we miss out on what is happening right in front of us.

 WHAT IS MINDFULNESS

Mindful.org defines mindfulness as “the basic human ability to be fully present, aware of where we are and what we’re doing, and not overly reactive or overwhelmed by what’s going on around us.” The good news is that we all have the ability to practice mindfulness. It is not something we need to invest in or cultivate. It is simply a practice.

HOW TO PRACTICE MINDFULNESS

One of the most effective ways to embark on a mindfulness practice is through meditation. Meditation can be done in any position: seated, lying down, standing, even walking. Carve out time on your calendar for ten minutes a day to start. Make this a dedicated pause in your day. If you are new to mediation, search for some guided ones to help get you started. Both the Calm and Headspace apps are wonderful and offer a variety of emotion and relationship-based guided meditations for users to choose from.

THE POWER OF MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness is our intention to tap into our present environment and experience to reduce stress, anxiety, and overwhelm while increasing happiness, gratitude, and our capacity to be in the moment. Mindfulness is evidence-based and here are just a few of the benefits:

  1. Reduced Stress – by focusing on our thoughts and emotions and acknowledging them, we take away their ability to sweep us up. This improves our emotion regulation abilities which can lead to a better mood and less stress.
  2. Quicker Recovery – mindfulness can help us to overcome chronic pain, illness, and diseases. Through mindfulness, we increase our self-compassion and self-kindness and decrease our reactivity and anxiety.
  3. Supplement for Depression – mindfulness has proven to be effective at decreasing depressive symptoms in those who suffer from mental illness by providing us with the tools we need to separate ourselves from negative emotions and enhance our coping skills. Mindfulness has even proven to benefit those who suffer from suicidal ideations and critical depressive episodes.
